There are several ways to keep yourself safe on the road during typical circumstances. Of course, the unexpected can occur at any time, so it is wise to remain prepared for unforeseen instances at all times.

One of the best ways to keep yourself out of harm’s way on the road is to utilize defensive driving techniques. Read on to learn what they are and how they can help you.

The Techniques

Use the following defensive driving techniques to help keep yourself safe while traveling on Alaska’s roads:

  • Leave adequate distance. Give yourself plenty of room between your car and the one in front of you so that if you’re forced to make a panic stop, you have enough space to do so.
    • A good rule to follow is to leave one car length’s distance for every 10 miles per hour (mph) of speed you’re traveling. For example, if you are driving at a rate of 60 mph, you should leave 6 car lengths between you and the vehicle ahead of you. This will provide plenty of distance, should you need to come to a sudden stop.
  • Remain alert. Keep your eyes on the road at all times and don’t get behind the wheel if you’re drowsy or under the influence of intoxicants of any kind.
  • Expect the unexpected. It is common for moose to cross Alaskan roads, so keep your eyes peeled for these monumental creatures.
  • Stay out of blind spots. If you can avoid it, try to stay out of other vehicles’ blind spots. They may not see you if they need to make a sudden lane change, so you’re better off not being in their unseen areas.
